Avocado, Bay Genus Details

One of the species within this genus, the American avocado, is native to South America and now is grown throughout frost free areas of the U.S. It has alternate leaves, 4-6" long, and can grow to 60 feet. The flowers are green. The fruit, also green, is pear-shaped with 1 large seed. The American avocado is grown for its fruit, which is shipped around the country. Another species, the red bay avocado is a native southeastern tree. It can grow to 60' tall with evergreen leaves and yellow flowers in spring.
